The first-ever Nigeria-Canada Trade & Investment Summit and Awards (NICATISA) has officially opened at the Homewood Suites & Hampton by Hilton, Toronto Airport, with nearly 300 delegates from government, business, and civil society in attendance.

The landmark event, backed by the Nigeria-Canada Parliamentary Friendship Group and the House Committee on Nigeria-Canada Parliamentary Relations, is designed to strengthen bilateral trade and investment while advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope economic agenda.

In his keynote address, Ambassador Nura Abba Rimi, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, described the summit as a “pivotal moment” for Nigeria-Canada relations. He highlighted the progress achieved under President Tinubu’s reforms, including sweeping fiscal and regulatory changes, streamlined company registration, e-customs digitalisation, and new protections for investors.

“These reforms are not abstract policies; they have already translated into strong GDP growth in non-oil sectors and growing interest from global investors,” Ambassador Rimi said, noting that inquiries for joint ventures have surged across Europe, Asia, and North America.

Over the next two days, the summit will focus on concrete outcomes, including negotiations on a Nigeria-Canada Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), new regulatory memoranda between agencies in both countries, discussions on direct air connectivity, and the launch of a Nigeria-Canada Binational Chamber of Commerce. In addition, women- and youth-led enterprises will be showcased, offering opportunities for cross-border expansion.

Observers say the summit signals a new phase of economic diplomacy, where both countries seek to transform policy commitments into tangible projects that benefit businesses and citizens alike.
