Kwara State Disburses Over N569 Million to Landowners, Host Communities for Smart City Project

In a major milestone for the Kwara Smart City project, the Kwara State Government has presented cheques totaling over N569 million to landowners and host communities as part of the first phase of compensation for the 19,300 hectares of land acquired for the development initiative.

The Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Geographic Information Service (KWGIS), ESV. Sulyman Babatunde Abdulkareem, highlighted that the Smart City project, proposed by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is aimed at driving strategic development and industrialization across the state. He emphasized that the project will integrate residential, educational, and industrial zones, including the Kwara State University of Education, the Renewed Hope Federal Government Mass Housing Project, and the relocation of the GRA Flower Garden.

ESV. Abdulkareem expressed gratitude to the host communities for their cooperation, urging recipients to utilize the compensation funds judiciously for the benefit of all community members.

Speaking on the broader vision of the project, Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, noted that the Smart City initiative is vital to addressing population growth, infrastructural development, and urban planning needs. He praised the state government’s stakeholder engagement, highlighting that host communities will directly benefit from infrastructural expansions and will play an integral role in the success of the project.

Earlier, the Director of Land Services at KWGIS, ESV. Mashood Kayode Hassan, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the compensation process aligns with legal frameworks while respecting the cultural and historical significance of the land to its custodians. He assured landowners that their rights and interests will be fully protected throughout the project.

The Kwara Smart City project is poised to bring sustainable growth, investment opportunities, and enhanced quality of life to the state while preserving the heritage of affected communities.
