In a strategic move to bolster food security, economic empowerment, and national development, NNPC Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of NNPC Ltd., has extended its Vulnerable Farmers Training Programme to Northern Nigeria, marking the second phase of the initiative.
The programme aims to equip farmers with modern agricultural techniques, focusing on climate-smart farming, organic fertilization, post-harvest loss reduction, and enhanced market access strategies. This follows the successful first phase conducted across the Southern region, which empowered over 4,000 farmers with modern practices and market-oriented skills, generating significant improvements in productivity and livelihoods.
The second phase will cover the North East, North West, and North Central geopolitical zones, with training sessions scheduled in six states and one in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
During the official flag-off of the first phase in Nsukka, Enugu State, the Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, highlighted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s agricultural transformation agenda. She stated, “At NNPC Ltd, we recognize that agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for over 70% of Nigeria’s population. Yet, many farmers remain trapped in subsistence-level production due to limited access to modern techniques, quality inputs, and competitive markets. This training is designed to change that narrative.”
Mrs. Arukwe emphasized that the programme is intended to provide participants with the necessary tools, knowledge, and resources to transition from subsistence farming to sustainable, commercial-scale agricultural production, ultimately boosting food security, creating employment, and enhancing the socio-economic lives of Nigerian farmers.
The expansion of the Farmers’ Empowerment Programme to Northern Nigeria reflects NNPC Foundation’s commitment to inclusive national development and the transformation of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
