Nigeria's Parliamentary Leadership Shines at 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, recently joined over 120 parliamentary leaders from around the world for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held from July 29 - 31, 2025, at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland. The conference brought together hundreds of participants, including Speakers of Parliament, Members of Parliament, diplomats, UN officials, global experts, and representatives of civil society, academia, and the media.

The conference provided a platform for parliamentary leaders to deliberate on some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity. The theme of the conference was a call to action for parliamentary leaders to work together to address the world's most pressing issues. At the thematic session on ‘The Role of Parliaments in Shaping Our Digital Future’, Speaker Abbas made robust submissions on the duty of parliaments to forge a secure, inclusive, and rights-centred digital future. He emphasized the importance of parliaments in ensuring that the digital world is governed in a way that promotes human dignity and accountability. He also advanced Nigeria’s proposal for the establishment of a Global Parliamentary Forum on Artificial Intelligence, to enhance inter-parliamentary collaboration on AI governance, craft ethical frameworks that uphold human dignity, and strengthen accountability across jurisdictions.

The Nigerian delegation was led by the President of the Senate, H.E. Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON. Together, both Presiding Officers of Nigeria’s bicameral legislature reaffirmed the country’s united and active parliamentary presence on the global stage. Their participation in the conference demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to global collaboration and its role in shaping the world's digital future.
