In a landmark step that underscores Nigeria’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy solutions, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned a new 40,000 cubic metres Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) carrier vessel in Ulsan, South Korea.

The vessel, christened “MT Iyaloja (Lagos)”, is owned by WAGL Energy Limited, a joint venture between NNPC Limited and Sahara Group.

Represented at the commissioning by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, President Tinubu hailed the project as a bold expression of Nigeria’s strategic vision to strengthen its role in the global clean energy value chain.

“This vessel represents not just a milestone for Nigeria but also Africa’s growing influence in the clean energy space. It shows our foresight, technical excellence, and dedication to a sustainable future.”

The MT Iyaloja (Lagos) is a dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier, capable of transporting large-scale gas cargoes across the world.

This addition brings WAGL’s total LPG vessel capacity to 162,000 CBM, further positioning Nigeria as a leading supplier of cleaner energy solutions.

Other vessels in the fleet include:

  • MT Africa Gas

  • MT Sahara Gas

  • MT BaruMK

  • MT Sapet

The President commended NNPC Limited and Sahara Group for their partnership through WAGL Energy, describing it as a model of collaboration that combines strategic foresight with technical capacity.

He emphasized that such investments will not only meet Nigeria’s domestic energy needs but also expand Africa’s role in the global transition to sustainable, low-carbon energy solutions.

Industry experts say the commissioning of the MT Iyaloja (Lagos) aligns with Nigeria’s broader agenda to deepen gas utilization, expand export opportunities, and reduce reliance on carbon-heavy fuels.

The project is also seen as a signal that Africa can play a stronger role in shaping the future of green energy while creating jobs, boosting trade, and supporting regional development.
