Prominent Islamic cleric, Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Mahmud Gumi, has raised serious concerns over what he alleges to be the secret presence of Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, operating within Nigeria. Taking to his official social media page on Monday, Gumi warned that such foreign intelligence activity could pose a direct threat to prominent Muslim figures in the country.
According to Gumi, the covert involvement of Mossad could result in the “clandestine murder of Muslim leaders in Nigeria.” He cited the 1998 death of former Nigerian Head of State, General Sani Abacha, suggesting that the military ruler may have been poisoned the night he hosted Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Abuja—an allegation long circulated but never substantiated.
“How can this genocidal apartheid government have a footing in Nigeria?” Gumi questioned, referring to Israel.
He further warned that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was “ill-advised” on the matter, stating that “any such collaboration will cost him a lot more than he may gain.”
No Official Response Yet
As of this report, the Presidency and Nigeria’s security agencies have not issued any formal response to Gumi’s allegations. The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has also remained silent.
Historical Context
General Sani Abacha died under controversial circumstances on June 8, 1998. While officially attributed to a heart attack, rumors of poisoning have persisted for decades. No forensic or governmental report has ever confirmed the theory.
Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service, is widely known for international covert operations. However, there is no publicly available evidence suggesting its current presence or activities in Nigeria.
Reactions and Implications
Gumi’s remarks have ignited heated debate across social media and religious circles. While some Nigerians echo the cleric's concerns about national sovereignty and foreign interference, others have dismissed the claims as unfounded and potentially inflammatory.
Security analysts warn that statements like Gumi’s, especially when lacking verified intelligence, could escalate religious and political tensions.
This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more details emerge or official statements are released.
