BREAKING: Dangote Begins Free Fuel Distribution, Slashes Petrol Price to ₦841 in Lagos

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a major intervention in Nigeria’s fuel market, confirming that free fuel distribution will commence on Monday while the pump price of petrol has been slashed to ₦841 per litre in Lagos.

The move, which has generated widespread reactions across the country, marks the refinery’s boldest step yet in addressing the biting cost of fuel and easing the financial strain on millions of Nigerians. According to the management of Dangote Refinery, the initiative is designed to cushion the effects of soaring inflation, high transportation costs, and the current economic hardship faced by citizens.

Residents of Lagos are expected to benefit first from the free distribution programme, which will be rolled out in phases at selected filling stations. Meanwhile, motorists outside the distribution points will purchase petrol at the reduced pump price of ₦841, a sharp drop compared to prevailing market rates across the country.

Industry experts have hailed the decision as a potential game-changer for Nigeria’s downstream sector, predicting that it could trigger a price war among marketers and force a downward review of fuel prices nationwide. However, others caution that while the gesture is laudable, questions remain about the sustainability of the initiative and how long Dangote can absorb the financial burden without government support.

Reactions on social media have been swift, with many Nigerians praising Aliko Dangote for taking a step where government interventions have fallen short. Commuters and transport unions in Lagos also expressed relief, noting that the development would likely bring immediate reductions in transport fares.

The announcement comes at a time when Nigerians are grappling with record-high energy costs, inflationary pressures, and dwindling purchasing power. Analysts say the Dangote Refinery’s intervention could set a precedent for stronger private-sector driven solutions to the country’s fuel crisis.
