Bauchi Police Arrest Unlicensed Pharmacist, Traditional Herbalist, and Syndicate in Shocking Child Abuse Cases

The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended multiple suspects in connection with child abuse and unlicensed medical practice, following disturbing reports from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.

In the first case, Ibrahim Hassan Mamman, a 27-year-old operating Hamdala Special Medicine Store in Yelwa, Bauchi metropolis, was arrested for administering injections to a 15-year-old girl, Maryam Magaji, which caused severe injury to her buttocks. The victim, who was treated for malaria, was later admitted to Bayara Hospital, where medical professionals confirmed that her injuries were a direct consequence of the injection.

Investigations revealed that Mamman lacks the necessary qualifications to practice as a pharmacist or healthcare professional and willfully administered injections despite his limited knowledge. A subsequent search of his pharmacy uncovered expired medications, including Children’s Tuxil and other drugs, prompting concerns about public safety. The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, directed a thorough investigation, after which Mamman will be charged to court.

In a separate incident, a 10-year-old girl was subjected to severe punishment with a heated metal spoon, allegedly by her in-law, Zuwaira Hassan, who accused the child of witchcraft. The suspect reportedly enlisted a traditional herbalist, Fatima Abdullahi, who supplied “witch protection” medicines, and forced her children to restrain the victim during the act. Both Zuwaira Hassan and the herbalist were arrested, and the child was evacuated to General Hospital, Toro for medical care.

During interrogations, the suspects admitted to their actions, attributing them to alleged supernatural concerns raised by the child and her interactions with the herbalist. The Bauchi State Police have transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigations and have pledged to ensure justice is served.

CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu has reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting children and vulnerable persons, urging parents and guardians to seek treatment for their children only from licensed and qualified professionals.

The Bauchi State Police Command emphasizes that all suspects will face the full weight of the law once investigations are concluded.
