President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed profound grief over the tragic death of Ms. Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, a talented news anchor with Arise News Television, who was killed during an attack by robbers at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.

In a statement conveyed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, the management and staff of Arise News, and the wider Nigerian media community. He described Ms. Maduagwu’s death as a “cruel and condemnable” loss, noting that she was a promising journalist whose life and career were tragically cut short.

President Tinubu called on security and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. He urged authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended promptly and brought to justice without delay. The President emphasized that a swift and comprehensive response is crucial in sending a strong message that violent crimes against citizens, particularly those in the media, will not be tolerated.

“Ms. Maduagwu was a promising professional journalist whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner. Security and law enforcement agencies should conduct a quick and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice without delay,” the President said.

While consoling the grieving family, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to the safety and security of all Nigerians. He assured citizens that his government would continue to strengthen measures aimed at combating crime in all its forms, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance national security infrastructure and improve law enforcement capabilities across the country.

The death of Ms. Maduagwu has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s media fraternity, raising concerns about the safety of journalists and the increasing threat posed by criminal activities in residential areas. Media professionals and organizations have repeatedly called for enhanced protection and stricter enforcement of security protocols to safeguard those reporting and delivering news to the public.

Analysts note that the killing underscores the urgent need for effective crime prevention strategies and community-level engagement to curb the rising incidences of armed robbery and attacks on citizens in urban centers like Abuja.

The President’s statement is seen as a reaffirmation of his administration’s resolve to protect citizens, uphold law and order, and ensure that acts of violence against individuals, especially journalists, are met with swift justice.
