A 19-year-old man described as mentally unstable has fatally stabbed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Babalola Joseph Idowu, in the Oke Ala community of Oba Ile, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident occurred on November 20, 2025, after the suspect’s mother reportedly invited NSCDC personnel to help restrain him due to years of uncontrollable and violent behaviour.
According to eyewitness accounts, two NSCDC officers responded to the distress call and attempted to apprehend the young man for transfer to a psychiatric facility. During the process, the suspect became suddenly aggressive, overpowered one of the officers, seized his operational knife, and stabbed him multiple times.
The critically injured officer was immediately rushed to the hospital but was later confirmed dead.
The NSCDC spokesperson said the officers were acting in the best interests of the community and the suspect when the attack occurred.
He added that the tragic incident underscores the risks security personnel face while trying to protect citizens, especially during crisis interventions involving mentally unstable individuals.
