Nigeria and Russia are marking 65 years of diplomatic relations, a milestone celebrated on November 25, 2025. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja has extended warm congratulations to Russia on this historic occasion.

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, praised Russia’s support and partnership over the decades. The relationship dates back to 1960, when Nigeria gained independence, making Russia (then the USSR) one of Nigeria’s first diplomatic allies.

Over the past 65 years, the Nigeria-Russia relationship has grown from acts of solidarity into a robust partnership across many sectors. It is built on mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to sovereignty and development.

The partnership has expanded into areas like education — with scholarships for Nigerian students in engineering, medicine, and sciences — infrastructure, defense, energy, security, agriculture, mineral development, counter-terrorism, and cultural exchanges. These collaborations have delivered real benefits to Nigerian citizens.

Nigeria values Russia’s support in international forums and recognizes Russia as an important global partner. Both countries continue to work together to promote trade, investment, science, technology, peace, and security, especially in today’s complex global landscape.

Looking ahead, Nigeria is optimistic about deepening this partnership and exploring new opportunities for collaboration. The country remains committed to building on the strong foundation laid over the past six decades.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening this historic friendship, emphasizing the importance of mutual prosperity and wellbeing for both nations.
