The Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, who has been in detention since July 2022 over alleged links to IPOB, a proscribed group.

Nwafor, from Isuikwuato in Abia State, was cleared after thorough investigations showed he was not involved in any criminal activities. In addition to his release, the DSS awarded him N5 million as compensation for wrongful detention, and he was also given free medical care.

This move is part of the DSS DG’s broader effort to review all pending cases inherited by the service, ensuring fairness and justice. Several other cases, including those of three other men suspected of IPOB membership, have also been reviewed and resolved in a similar manner.

The DSS DG, Mr. Ajayi, emphasized that mistakes can happen, but the agency is committed to correcting them. He pointed out that the DSS previously paid N20 million in compensation to a businessman wrongly shot in 2016, doubling the court-ordered damages of N10 million.

Nwafor is not the first person from the Igbo community to be released and compensated under this leadership. In recent months, the DSS has released and paid compensation to individuals wrongly detained for IPOB membership and even a businesswoman arrested by another security agency for alleged oil bunkering.

This trend of releasing wrongfully detained persons and compensating them has become a hallmark of the current DSS leadership’s efforts to uphold accountability and the rule of law.
