Anambra State, Nigeria – Chaos erupted along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area when gunmen attacked the convoy of former Labour Minister and ex-Governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige. Fortunately, Ngige was not in the convoy at the time of the assault.
According to Ngige’s former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, the attackers targeted the convoy, reportedly shooting a police officer assigned to the team and seizing his gun and uniform.
The Anambra State Police have launched an immediate manhunt for the fleeing assailants. A combined team of tactical operatives, including the Rapid Response Squad and the Special Anti-Cultism Unit, tracked the gunmen, who eventually abandoned the white Mercedes-Benz SUV they had taken. The vehicle has been recovered and secured for further investigation.
One police officer sustained a minor gunshot injury during the incident but is stable and receiving medical attention. Authorities have assured the public that updates on the investigation and ongoing operations will be shared as the situation develops.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed: “A combined team of police tactical operatives, including the Rapid Response Squad and the Special Anti-Cultism Unit, pursued the armed attackers. During the chase, the convoy aligned with the operatives, exchanged fire with the hoodlums, and forced them to abandon the vehicle.”
The incident underscores the persistent security challenges in parts of Anambra State, highlighting the risks faced even by high-profile individuals and their security details.
