The 39th Akesan Day Celebration in Iperu-Remo, Ogun State, has spotlighted the economic potential of culture and tourism in Nigeria. Speaking at the event, Governor Prince Dr. Dapo Abiodun emphasized that when properly developed, cultural festivals can become significant contributors to the nation’s foreign exchange earnings.
Governor Abiodun noted that countries around the world have successfully diversified their economies through culture and tourism, urging Nigeria to replicate such models by promoting its rich array of cultural festivals. “Culture, when properly developed, can become a major driver of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings,” he said. “We believe Nigeria can achieve the same by promoting its numerous cultural festivals.”
Highlighting the role of festivals like Akesan Day, Lisabi Day, Oronna Day, and Ojude Oba, the Governor explained that such events attract visitors who support local businesses and create jobs for artisans, entertainers, food vendors, hotels, and transport operators. “Festivals become tourism platforms while also promoting unity, shared identity, and social values,” he added.
The Governor also reaffirmed his commitment to preserving history, supporting cultural institutions, and driving community development across Ogun State. He commended President Bola Tinubu for his economic reforms and expressed readiness to align state initiatives with federal programs to further enhance growth and progress.
Contributions from cultural stakeholders and traditional leaders at the celebration underscored Akesan Day’s significance as a unifying event and catalyst for local development, strengthening the community’s cultural identity and economic prospects.
As Nigeria continues to explore diverse avenues for economic growth, Akesan Day demonstrates how cultural heritage can be leveraged as both a unifying force and an engine for jobs, tourism, and sustainable development.
