Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed alarming details about the composition of Boko Haram fighters, highlighting the involvement of children in the extremist group. Speaking about a meeting with Islamic scholar Sheik Gumi during his tenure, Obasanjo said Gumi visited Boko Haram encampments in Sambisa Forest and returned deeply shocked by what he witnessed.
According to Obasanjo, Gumi reported that some of the insurgents were under 15 years old, were armed with guns, and heavily involved with hard drugs. “I met with Sheik Gumi during my tenure after he went to meet with the Boko Haram terrorists in Sambisa Forest. Gumi expressed shock, saying that some of the boys were under the age of 15 years, had guns, and were soaked in hard drugs,” Obasanjo stated.
The revelation underscores the urgent need for interventions targeting child recruitment and radicalization within terrorist networks, while highlighting the complex challenges in countering Boko Haram’s operations in North-East Nigeria.
