The Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) has firmly rejected public claims suggesting that Mr. Kolawole Muyiwa — recently convicted and handed a life sentence for sexually assaulting a minor — was ever employed by the institution. The university says the clarification is necessary to correct misinformation and protect its reputation as it intensifies efforts to maintain a safe learning environment.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, who strongly condemned sexual violence, described such acts as behaviour that “debases humanity.” She explained that contrary to what appeared in the court judgment, Muyiwa had no employment history with LASUED. Instead, he was an outsider who gained access to the campus through a lecturer, Mr. Sunday Fawowe, who allegedly allowed him to use his office.
It was inside that office that the assault on a female student — a minor at the time — reportedly occurred in 2021. The university said it took immediate action by reporting the case to the appropriate authorities, a move that eventually led to Muyiwa’s prosecution and conviction in 2025.
Prof. Lafiaji-Okuneye noted that the court’s identification of Muyiwa as a staff member was incorrect, stressing that the university “unequivocally stated” that he had never been in its employment. Fawowe, who was referenced in the judgment for granting the intruder access, declined to comment when contacted.
The institution emphasised that its priority remains safeguarding students and creating a secure academic environment. It added that setting the record straight is important not only for public awareness but also to discourage any behaviour that could compromise campus safety.
The message from LASUED is clear: sexual violence will not be tolerated, and accountability will be pursued—whether the offender is an employee or an outsider
