The Lagos State Government has received a major boost in its drive to strengthen healthcare safety as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) donates a modern healthcare waste incinerator to the state. The facility, now installed at the Agboyi-Ketu Primary Health Care Centre, is expected to significantly improve the safe disposal of infectious and hazardous medical waste.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, described the donation as both timely and strategic, noting that it addresses one of the most critical gaps in primary healthcare delivery—safe waste management. He said the new equipment strengthens the protection of patients, health workers, and the environment.

Dr. Mustafa added that the state is working to build a more resilient and efficient primary healthcare system, with ongoing reforms in infection prevention, environmental health safety, and compliance with national waste guidelines. He further highlighted UNICEF’s longstanding partnership with Lagos in immunisation, maternal and child health, health data, and now medical waste management.

He assured that the state government is committed to maintaining the incinerator through proper training of staff, strict operational standards, and routine monitoring, adding that at least two more incinerators will be deployed to other parts of Lagos to further strengthen safe waste disposal.

Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Hon. Mrs. Adunni Adetola Abubakar, expressed delight that the community was selected to host the new facility, promising that it would be well protected and properly maintained. She reaffirmed the council’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare services and pledged full support for LSPHCB’s ongoing reforms, including adopting the state’s new primary healthcare prototype model.

The donation marks another milestone in Lagos State’s efforts to improve public health and environmental safety as part of its broader vision for a safer, cleaner, and more efficient healthcare system.
