Authorities in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a 36-year-old fisherman identified as Joseph Mbake, a national of Cameroon, over allegations involving the molestation of a four-year-old child in the Mkpanak community of the state’s coastal region.

The arrest was carried out by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command following a complaint lodged by the child’s mother after she noticed unusual physical symptoms while bathing her daughter. According to police statements released through the Command’s Public Relations Office, the mother observed a discharge from the child’s genital area, which raised immediate concerns about possible abuse.

Upon further inquiry, the child reportedly disclosed that an adult male, whom she could identify, was responsible for the incident. Acting swiftly, law enforcement officers issued a medical examination referral and ensured that the child received urgent clinical attention. Medical professionals are currently documenting findings that may serve as forensic evidence during subsequent legal proceedings. Officials have not publicly released detailed medical results, citing the need to preserve investigative integrity and protect the victim’s privacy.

Police spokesperson DSP Timfon John confirmed that investigators intensified surveillance within Mkpanak community following receipt of credible intelligence related to the case. Early-morning operations conducted on March 1, 2026, led to the apprehension of Joseph Mbake, along with several other individuals taken in for questioning as part of a broader inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the allegation.

The police command stated that preliminary investigations suggest the alleged incident occurred on February 14, 2026. Authorities are working to verify whether the suspect had unsupervised access to the child at the time of the alleged offence and whether other persons may have been involved or had knowledge of the incident.

As part of standard criminal investigative procedure, officers conducted an identification parade during which the victim reportedly recognised the suspect. Law enforcement officials explained that such procedures are carried out under controlled conditions to minimise the risk of misidentification and to strengthen the evidentiary basis of potential prosecution.

The suspect’s immigration status is also being examined. Since Joseph Mbake is reported to be a foreign national residing in the coastal fishing settlement, police investigators are coordinating with relevant immigration authorities to verify his legal documentation, residency status, and authorisation to engage in economic activity within Nigeria.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reiterated its strong condemnation of all forms of sexual violence, particularly offences involving children. In its public statement, the Command stressed that safeguarding minors remains a priority operational responsibility. Parents and guardians were advised to maintain close supervision of children’s activities and to promptly report any suspicious behaviour or unusual interactions to the nearest police station.

Community reactions within Mkpanak have been mixed, with residents expressing shock and concern over the allegation. Some inhabitants described the suspect as a fisherman who had lived in the settlement for a period of time, though local authorities have not confirmed the duration or legality of his stay pending immigration verification.

Human rights and child protection advocates have used the incident to renew calls for stronger preventive measures against sexual abuse of minors. Experts emphasise the importance of community awareness programmes, improved reporting mechanisms, and enhanced collaboration between residents and law enforcement agencies in protecting vulnerable children.

Legal professionals note that if evidence presented during the investigation supports the allegation, the suspect could face prosecution under Nigerian criminal statutes relating to sexual offences against minors. Conviction in such cases typically carries severe custodial penalties aimed at deterring similar crimes and reinforcing child protection laws.

Police authorities assured the public that the suspect will be charged to court upon completion of investigations. The Command also stated that due process will be strictly observed throughout the judicial proceedings.

The case has also drawn attention to the social and security dynamics of coastal fishing communities where migrant labour and local populations sometimes coexist. Some security analysts argue that isolated settlements, limited nighttime surveillance, and the movement of transient workers can create environments that require stronger community-based monitoring systems.

Medical and psychological care for the victim is expected to remain a central concern as the investigation progresses. Child welfare specialists stress that recovery from such experiences requires not only physical treatment but also long-term emotional and psychological support.

Authorities urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could compromise investigative processes or further traumatise the victim’s family. The police command reiterated its commitment to transparency and professional conduct while handling the case.

Stone Reporters note that the arrest reflects continuing enforcement efforts against sexual offences in Nigeria’s coastal and rural communities. Nevertheless, the incident highlights the persistent challenge of protecting children in areas where economic migration and limited security infrastructure may intersect.

Investigations are ongoing, and additional updates will be released as forensic analysis, immigration verification, and legal preparations advance.
