Lagos, Nigeria — The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service recently conducted a fire safety awareness and education programme at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Apapa, Lagos. The initiative, held in collaboration with the SHE Safety and Health Initiative, aimed to strengthen emergency preparedness and enhance fire safety knowledge among correctional officers and inmates.
During the outreach, participants were trained on identifying fire hazards, using firefighting equipment, and following proper evacuation procedures. Officials emphasised the importance of proactive safety measures, especially in institutional settings where large populations are housed in confined spaces, which can complicate emergency responses.
Interactive sessions allowed correctional staff and inmates to participate in practical demonstrations, including the operation of fire extinguishers, hazard assessment, and evacuation drills. Facilitators stressed that fire safety is a shared responsibility and that understanding emergency protocols can save lives.
The collaboration with the SHE Safety and Health Initiative brought together specialised safety expertise and operational experience from the fire service, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of fire prevention and response strategies. Organisers highlighted that extending such training to institutional environments helps reduce risks and ensures that both staff and inmates are better prepared for emergencies.
The visit aligns with broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to institutionalise a culture of fire safety across public facilities, schools, markets, and high-risk locations. Officials confirmed that follow-up training sessions and periodic safety drills would be implemented to maintain awareness and preparedness.
Correctional facility administrators expressed appreciation for the programme, noting that it equips staff and inmates with practical skills and knowledge that can prevent incidents and ensure a safer environment within the prison complex.
