Uli, Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria — A brutal killing of a young man in his 20s has rattled communities in the Uli area after he was allegedly murdered by his mother’s lover amid an escalating dispute over their relationship. The incident, which took place on the night of Sunday, March 15, 2026, has sparked anger, retaliation and an ongoing police investigation.
Residents of the Uli community, located near the campus of Anambra State University, reported that tensions between the deceased and the suspect, identified locally as Gozie, had been building for weeks. Neighbours said the young man frequently confronted the man over his mother’s relationship with him, especially as the man began visiting the home regularly and even stayed overnight. These disagreements eventually triggered a tragic escalation.
On the night of the incident, neighbours said they heard unusual noises coming from the compound where the family lived, but those sounds were initially dismissed as another quarrel. It was only when no one emerged from the compound for about two days that residents became suspicious and went to investigate. When they opened the young man’s room, they found his lifeless body lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts believed to have been inflicted by a machete. The brutal nature of the killing drew a large crowd.
Full of grief and outrage, some youths in the community began searching for the suspect and the victim’s mother, who neighbours say fled the area shortly after the killing. A video circulating online showed a group of youths carrying the victim’s corpse in a wheelbarrow through parts of the Uli community while chanting and demanding justice.
The victim’s mother had reportedly returned to Uli after the death of her husband, an indigene of the neighbouring Egbu community, where the young man also hailed from. Residents described how the relationship between the suspect and the woman had been a persistent source of conflict, often culminating in heated arguments between the suspect and the victim.
After the killing, tensions spilled over between the Uli and Egbu communities. Some youths from Egbu were said to have retaliated by attacking the suspect’s family compound in Uli and setting several buildings ablaze. This outbreak of violence compounded the sense of fear and disorder as residents called for calm and justice.
Community elders condemned both the killing and the subsequent mob action, warning against acts of collective vengeance and urging residents to respect the rule of law. They appealed to youths to refrain from further violence that could escalate into broader communal conflict.
The tragic events were reported promptly to the police, and the victim’s remains were recovered and deposited at a morgue pending autopsy. A police source in the Ihiala area said the case was being documented and would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further action. At the time of reporting, both the suspect and the victim’s mother were still at large, and detectives were actively working to determine the full circumstances leading to the murder.
The police command’s official spokesperson said he could not immediately confirm details of the case but assured that investigations were ongoing and that updates would be provided once available.
The killing has reignited concerns about domestic tensions and the lethality of interpersonal disputes in communities across Anambra State. Local leaders and residents are urging swift action by law enforcement to prevent the cycle of violence from spreading further and to restore a sense of safety and order in areas affected by the tragedy.
Community advocates have also called for improved conflict resolution mechanisms within neighbourhoods, highlighting that unresolved domestic quarrels can sometimes escalate into fatal outcomes if underlying issues around communication, respect and boundaries are not addressed early.
For many in Uli and surrounding communities, the shock of the young man’s death serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the need for stronger social supports, communal dialogue, and peaceful means of addressing relationships and family disputes. Residents from both Uli and Egbu have appealed for calm and urged collective cooperation with police to bring the case to a lawful and just conclusion.
