The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old man allegedly found in possession of the severed head of a six-year-old girl in Ibadan, in a gruesome case that has shocked residents of the state and triggered outrage in the affected community.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, April 11, 2026, in Adigun Village, located within the Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ona-Ara Local Government Area. Police said they acted on credible information that a young girl had been unlawfully killed and dismembered, with her head discovered in the possession of the suspect identified as Sodiq Kayode Akorede.
According to the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, the command swiftly deployed operatives to the scene after receiving the report. Officers were instructed to secure the area, recover the exhibit, and take the suspect into custody despite attempts by an angry mob to carry out jungle justice.
The police confirmed that the suspect was rescued from mob attack and subsequently arrested. Authorities noted that the intervention was carried out with restraint and professionalism in order to prevent further escalation of violence in the community.
Preliminary findings from the police investigation indicate that the victim, a six-year-old girl identified as Mutiyatu Sunday, was allegedly killed and her head severed before being found in the possession of the suspect. The command further stated that the suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Following his arrest, the suspect was taken to a medical facility for treatment after sustaining injuries from the mob attack before being moved under police custody for further investigation. He is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for detailed interrogation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State condemned the incident and strongly warned against acts of jungle justice, stressing that such actions undermine lawful investigation and the justice system. He urged residents to allow security agencies to handle criminal matters rather than resorting to violence.
Police authorities also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and assist ongoing investigations with useful information. They emphasized the importance of timely reporting of suspicious activities to prevent similar tragedies.
The gruesome nature of the case has sparked widespread shock in Ibadan and surrounding communities, with residents expressing concern over rising incidents of violent crime in parts of the state. Many have called for stricter security measures and faster judicial processes to deter similar offenses.
Security analysts note that cases involving ritual-related killings or extreme violence often generate public outrage and heighten tensions, particularly when suspects are caught in possession of human remains. They warn that such incidents, if not swiftly addressed, can erode public confidence in safety and law enforcement.
The police have assured that a full investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing, including whether other individuals may have been involved. Authorities say all leads will be thoroughly pursued to ensure justice is served.
As the investigation continues, the victim’s identity and the circumstances leading to her death remain central to police inquiries. The command has reiterated its commitment to transparency and due process in handling the case.
Residents of the affected area remain in shock, with community leaders calling for calm and urging security agencies to intensify patrols to prevent further unrest. The incident has also reignited concerns about child safety and the need for stronger community vigilance mechanisms.
Police authorities maintain that the suspect will be prosecuted once investigations are concluded, as efforts continue to uncover the full details behind the tragic killing.
