Two Bandits Killed, IEDs Recovered and Detonated as Zamfara Police Thwart Attack on Rugar Buda Village

Operatives of the Zamfara State Police Command have neutralised two suspected bandits and recovered explosive devices in the Bungudu Local Government Area of the state following separate security operations carried out in the early hours of May 26, 2026. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said in a statement that a group of armed hoodlums invaded the Funture area of Rugar Buda Village via Nahuce District in Bungudu Emirate around 12:30 a.m., firing sporadically in an attempt to cause panic among residents.

Police operatives and other security personnel stationed in Nahuce swiftly responded to the distress call and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun duel. During the encounter, two bandits were neutralised, forcing the remaining criminals to flee into the surrounding forest with possible gunshot injuries. A vigilante member, Kabiru Auwal, 35, of Gwargwabe area, sustained a gunshot injury on his left hand, resulting in a fracture; he is currently receiving treatment at a hospital and responding to treatment. Patrol and confidence-building operations have been intensified in the affected community to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents.

In a related development on May 25, 2026, the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in collaboration with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal – Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD‑CBRN) team, conducted a sweeping operation along the Bilbis–Kuncin Kalgo Road following a distress call. The team detected a pressure‑plate improvised explosive device (IED), also known as a victim‑operated IED, at the Hayin Kagana–Kuncin Kalgo axis.

The explosive device was suspected to have been planted by terrorists operating within the area with the intention of targeting security personnel and innocent civilians. EOD‑CBRN experts successfully evacuated and neutralised the IED without any casualties, and its components were safely demolished in accordance with standard safety procedures. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad Muhammad Bello, commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by the operatives and reassured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across the state. He urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information to aid ongoing operations against criminal elements.
