At least eight persons have been killed following a violent communal clash between farmers and herders in Gulma town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, the police have confirmed.

The incident, which occurred at about 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026, was reportedly triggered when a farmer was allegedly stabbed to death by a Fulani herder while working on his farmland. A source familiar with the incident stated that the herder had, prior to the attack, sent his cows onto the farmer's land. When the farmer attempted to push the cows away, he broke the leg of one of the animals, creating animosity between the two. The herder later returned to the farm and engaged the farmer. During the ensuing struggle, the herder allegedly brought out a knife and stabbed the farmer, leading to his death.

The killing sparked a reprisal by some members of the farming community, who allegedly stormed nearby Fulani settlements, resulting in the deaths of about eight persons and heightening tensions in the area.

Confirming the incident to newsmen, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said security operatives swiftly intervened to contain the situation and prevent further loss of lives. “The incident was a reprisal following the stabbing of a farmer by a herder. We are currently in control of the situation, and eight people lost their lives,” the police spokesman stated.

Usman also disclosed that four injured persons were rescued by security personnel and taken to a medical facility for treatment before being discharged. He added that normalcy had since been restored in the community, while security personnel have been deployed to maintain peace and prevent any further breakdown of law and order.

The police spokesperson appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding, urging them to channel grievances through appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence or self-help. Authorities say investigations into the incident are continuing.
