The Plateau State Police Command has arrested another suspect in connection with the mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaya, a graduate of the University of Jos who was brutally tortured to death on July 27, 2026, over allegations that he stole an iPhone 12. The arrest brings the total number of suspects in police custody to five, as detectives intensify efforts to track down other fleeing individuals linked to the heinous crime that has sparked nationwide outrage.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, detectives acting on credible intelligence arrested 24-year-old Yusuf Christopher Beskeni for his alleged involvement in the incident. The command described the arrest as another major breakthrough in its ongoing investigation into the tragic death of Mbaya, who was lynched at an off-campus residence behind the City of David along Ring Road in Jos North Local Government Area.
Preliminary investigations and evidence gathered so far indicate that Beskeni played an active role in the unlawful assault on the deceased. He is specifically alleged to have participated in tying Mbaya to a pole while other members of the mob subjected him to severe torture, an attack that ultimately resulted in his death. The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting investigators, while efforts have been intensified to track down other suspects who remain at large.
The Acting Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, DCP Usman Sheikh Adamu, assured the family of the deceased and the people of Plateau State that the command remains committed to ensuring justice is served. He promised that no individual found to have participated in the torture and eventual death of Mbaya would escape prosecution. "No stone will be left unturned in ensuring that all those responsible face the full weight of the law," the police boss declared.
The killing of Ibrahim Mbaya, who was a model and a political science graduate awaiting mobilization for the National Youth Service Corps, had triggered widespread outrage and renewed calls for an end to jungle justice. Mbaya was accused of stealing an iPhone 12 at a friend's apartment where he had spent the night after a social event. The mob that gathered reportedly beat him for hours, tied him up, and tortured him in an attempt to force a confession. The alleged phone was never found in his possession.
With the latest arrest, the total number of suspects in police custody has risen to five. The command has reiterated its determination to arrest every person connected with the crime and urged members of the public with useful information to cooperate with the police. The police also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens and ensuring that anyone found culpable in the case is prosecuted in accordance with the law.
