Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has issued a passionate appeal for peace ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, urging residents to reject violence and intimidation while directly calling on the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, not to turn the state into a "political battleground."
Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Davido, who serves as the Chairman of the Imole Youth Campaign Mobilisation Team supporting his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke's re-election bid, addressed growing political tensions in the state. The singer, who described Governor Adeleke as "one of the best, if not the best" leaders the state has ever produced, said he was speaking not just as a celebrity but as "one of your own" and a voice for the youth. "I understand the tension and emotions surrounding this election, but I urge everyone to remain calm," Davido said, adding that no political ambition, disagreement, or election was worth the life of any Osun son or daughter.
In a direct appeal to Governor Uzodimma, Davido said he had heard "rumours suggesting that there are moves to interfere in the Osun State election or use the state as a political battleground to prove a point." While clarifying that he was not presenting the claims as facts, he appealed to the Imo governor to use his influence to promote peace and allow the people of Osun to choose their candidates freely. "We have mutual connections, and I have a deep connection to Imo State. My wife, Chioma, is from the state, which makes this appeal more sincere," Davido said, before repeating his plea: "Please, let Osun remain peaceful."
The singer also urged candidates in the election, including Governor Adeleke and APC candidate Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, to respect the will of the electorate. "If they choose you, let your victory come through their votes. If they choose someone else, let their decision be respected," he said. He stressed that political opportunities come and go, but no political ambition should be allowed to endanger lives or destabilise the state. "Politics is temporary, but Osun will remain. No political victory is worth violence, destruction or the loss of a single life," Davido declared. He encouraged eligible voters to come out peacefully, exercise their civic rights without fear, and reject intimidation, provocation, and destruction, stressing that every vote counts and the choice of the electorate must be respected.
The Osun State governorship election is scheduled for August 15, 2026, and is considered one of the most consequential off-cycle polls in Nigeria's electoral calendar. Political tensions have been high in the state, with the ruling Accord Party and the opposition APC trading accusations of violence, intimidation, and electoral manipulation.
