A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has issued a forceful call for Nigerians to unite and vote President Bola Tinubu out of office in the 2027 presidential election, alleging that the President is deliberately making it difficult for opposition parties to field candidates and has rigged the Electoral Act in his favour. Galadima made the declaration on Friday, August 7, 2026, during the inauguration of the NDC National Reconciliation Committee in Abuja, a panel set up to resolve post-primary disputes ahead of the 2027 polls.
Galadima, a former ally of the late President Muhammadu Buhari and a veteran opposition figure, accused Tinubu of using his position to protect himself and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) while creating obstacles for other political parties. He alleged that the President had personally influenced the drafting of the Electoral Act before it was presented to the National Assembly, effectively tilting the playing field in his favour. "Tinubu is only protecting himself and the APC and making it difficult for other parties to produce candidates," Galadima said.
The NDC chieftain insisted that the President is not preparing for a genuine contest in 2027 but is instead relying on institutional manipulation to secure victory. "The president is not thinking of a contest with anybody, but we won't allow it," Galadima declared. In one of his most striking remarks, he added: "Even if it's an empty coffin, all Nigerians must come together and throw him out for the sake of this country." The comment echoed his earlier statement in April 2026, when he declared that "even a corpse" could defeat Tinubu in a free and fair election.
Galadima's call for unity comes as opposition parties grapple with internal divisions and the challenge of presenting a united front against the APC. The NDC, which has been positioning itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party, has been working to reconcile aggrieved members following its primary elections. Former presidential candidate Pat Utomi, who chairs the reconciliation committee, expressed confidence that the party could resolve its internal disputes and focus on the broader goal of unseating Tinubu. However, efforts to form a united opposition coalition have historically been hampered by disagreements over candidates, power-sharing arrangements, and party structures.
Galadima's remarks come amid growing public frustration over Nigeria's worsening economic conditions, including soaring inflation, rising food prices, and widespread unemployment. The Tinubu administration has defended its economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates, as necessary steps to stabilise the economy. However, opposition figures and civil society groups have criticised the impact of these policies, which have pushed millions of citizens into deeper poverty.
The NDC chieftain also warned that the National Assembly was backing President Tinubu's efforts to destroy the opposition, a claim that has added to the political tension ahead of the 2027 elections. As the election season gathers momentum, Galadima's warning has resonated with opposition supporters who are eager to see a change in leadership. His message is clear: if Nigerians want to remove Tinubu, they must come together and vote as one. Whether the opposition can overcome its internal divisions and mount a credible challenge remains to be seen, but Galadima has made it clear that the stakes could not be higher.
