The Nigeria Police Force has banned politicians and VIPs from bringing armed escorts to polling units during Saturday's Osun State governorship election. The order, announced on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu, is part of a major security operation to ensure a peaceful and credible vote.
The police say political figures and VIPs are not allowed to bring armed escorts, security aides or any unauthorised persons to polling units or collation centres on election day. State‑established security outfits like Amotekun, vigilante groups, hunters and neighbourhood watch are also barred from any election‑security duties. They cannot escort materials, guard polling units or carry weapons during the election.
The Inspector‑General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed Deputy Inspector‑General of Police, DIG Ishyaku Mohammed, to Osun State to lead the police operation. He will work with Assistant Inspectors‑General and Commissioners of Police across the state's three senatorial districts to supervise security, gather intelligence and respond quickly to any threats.
About 15,000 police officers, including mobile police, dog handlers and medical personnel, have already been deployed for the election. The police have warned that anyone caught snatching ballots, intimidating voters or engaging in thuggery will be arrested and prosecuted. Firearms and dangerous weapons are strictly banned around polling units and collation centres.
The police have also appealed to residents and voters to come out peacefully and exercise their franchise without fear. The Force has promised to be professional, neutral and respectful of human rights throughout the electoral process.
Saturday's election will see 14 candidates contesting, including Governor Ademola Adeleke. The campaign period has been marked by tension and violence, including allegations of killings, harassment and intimidation of opposition supporters. The police ban on armed escorts and non‑state security groups is a bold move to prevent further violence.
Whether it will work remains to be seen, but one message is clear: on Saturday, only accredited police officers will carry guns at the polling units. Everyone else must show up unarmed and let the people decide.
