Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has joined the nation in mourning the passing of the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, CON, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, in Cairo, Egypt, after a prolonged illness. Kwankwaso described the late monarch as a "distinguished and far-sighted leader" who guided the Gumel Emirate to remarkable heights over 45 years of dedicated service.
In a condolence message posted on his verified X account, the former governor expressed deep sorrow over the loss. "I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness, the Emir of Gumel, Alhaji (Dr.) Ahmad Muhammad Sani II," Kwankwaso said. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the late emir's family, the Gumel Emirate Council, and the people and government of Jigawa State. Kwankwaso prayed for the repose of the monarch's soul, asking Almighty Allah to grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
The Emir of Gumel, who ascended the throne on December 16, 1980, reigned for nearly 46 years. He died at the age of 85 while receiving treatment in Egypt. His death came just four days after the passing of the Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, Bello Suleiman, who died on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau.
The late monarch was born into the Gumel Emirate ruling family and received his early education at Gumel Primary School between 1948 and 1953 before proceeding to Hadejia Middle School. He later attended Rumfa College, formerly Kano High School, completing his secondary education in 1961. He obtained a Diploma in Public Administration from the Institute of Administration in Zaria in 1963 and a Higher Diploma in 1970 before proceeding to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, United States, where he studied Political Science and International Relations between 1972 and 1978.
Muhammad-Sani began his working career with the Gumel Native Authority between 1961 and 1963 before joining the Nigeria Immigration Service in 1964. He served as Commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs and Culture in the old Kano State between 1978 and 1980, during which time he was involved in the establishment of The Triumph newspaper and CTV67 television station, now ARTV, as well as the expansion of Radio Kano. His political career came to an end following the death of his father, who was then the Emir of Gumel, on December 13, 1980. Three days later, on December 16, 1980, Muhammad-Sani was selected to succeed his father and formally ascended the throne as the Emir of Gumel.
Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Pantami, also announced the monarch's death in a condolence message, describing the late emir as a "distinguished scholar, a beacon of wisdom and a father to all" who dedicated his life to the service of his people, the promotion of peace and education, and the preservation of cultural values. Pantami extended his condolences to the immediate family, the Gumel Emirate Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, CFR, the Jigawa State Government, and the entire nation. He prayed for the repose of the monarch's soul and for strength for the family and people of Gumel and Jigawa State to bear the loss.
The Gumel Emirate is regarded as one of the oldest and most respected traditional institutions in northern Nigeria, with a history dating back to the 18th century. The emirate has historically been associated with scholarship, governance and service to humanity, producing scholars, jurists and community leaders who contributed to the intellectual and moral development of the region. The late Ahmed Sani II presided over the emirate for almost five decades, during which he served as custodian of its traditional values and provided leadership to generations of residents. His death marks the end of a long reign and the beginning of a period of mourning across the Gumel Emirate.
