A 7:45 p.m. ambush turned into a nightmare for a woman in Sapele, Delta State, as armed men dragged her from her vehicle at the entrance of her own compound and into a nearby bush. But within 24 hours, the Delta State Police Command had turned the tables, rescuing the victim unharmed and launching a manhunt for the fleeing suspects.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at approximately 7:45 p.m. along the Eko-Amukpe Road in Sapele Local Government Area. According to a statement issued by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the woman had just arrived at her residence and was attempting to drive into her compound when she was ambushed by armed men. "The suspects fired several shots into the air before taking her into a nearby bush," Edafe stated.
Upon receiving the distress report, the Divisional Police Officer of Sapele Division immediately mobilised patrol and surveillance teams to the scene. At the location, officers recovered expended AK-47 ammunition shells, evidence of the violence that had occurred. Operatives, supported by local vigilantes, then commenced an intensive search of the surrounding bushes. The search was sustained throughout the night and into the early morning hours of Thursday, September 3, 2026, mounting pressure on the kidnappers and forcing them to abandon the victim and flee. The woman was subsequently located and rescued unharmed. She has since been reunited with her family.
While the rescue operation was a success, the police have not yet apprehended the perpetrators. The Command has intensified efforts to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects. The prompt response and sustained search operation by the police and vigilantes ensured the victim's safe return, demonstrating the effectiveness of community collaboration in tackling crime. The police have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
