The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a three‑day weather warning, forecasting cloudy skies, thunderstorms, and moderate to heavy rainfall across the country from Monday, September 7, to Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The agency, in its weather outlook released on Sunday, September 6, urged residents to take precautions during thunderstorms, advising motorists to avoid driving during heavy rain, residents to disconnect electrical appliances, and airline operators to obtain airport‑specific weather reports.
For Monday, September 7, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Adamawa, Kebbi, and Taraba in the northern region, with most states in the north expected to experience thunderstorms and moderate rainfall later in the day. In the North‑Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Kwara, the agency forecast thunderstorms with light rains in the morning, followed by moderate rainfall across most parts in the afternoon or evening. For the southern region, NiMet predicted cloudy conditions with light morning rains over parts of Ebonyi, Edo, Delta, Abia, Cross River, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa, with light rains expected later in the day across the South‑East, South‑South, and South‑West.
On Tuesday, September 8, the agency forecast patches of clouds over the northern region, with chances of thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Taraba in the morning, and thunderstorms with moderate rains over Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi later in the day. The North‑Central region is expected to have cloudy skies in the morning, followed by thunderstorms with moderate rains later, while the southern region will see cloudy conditions with light morning rains over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom, and light rains across most parts later in the day.
For Wednesday, September 9, NiMet envisages partly cloudy skies across the northern region, with morning thunderstorms over several states, including Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara. Heavy rains are expected later in the day over parts of Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, and Adamawa, with Taraba, Bauchi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, and Gombe also likely to experience heavy rains. The North‑Central region will have cloudy skies in the morning, followed by thunderstorms with heavy rains later, while the southern region will see cloudy conditions with light morning rains over parts of Imo, Abia, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, and heavy rains across most parts later in the day.
NiMet warned that moderate to heavy rainfall, especially across the northern and central regions, could lead to temporary water accumulation and localised flooding in low‑lying communities and areas with poor drainage. The agency cautioned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms and urged residents to fasten loose objects to prevent accidents. Motorists were advised to avoid driving during heavy rainfall because rain can reduce visibility and make roads slippery, while residents were warned not to attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads. Airline operators were directed to obtain airport‑specific weather reports from NiMet for effective flight planning. The agency also urged residents to stay away from tall trees to avoid injuries from falling branches.
As the three‑day weather event begins, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency has called on Nigerians to remain informed through regular weather updates and to take appropriate precautions during periods of severe weather. With the rainy season already causing significant disruptions in several states, the latest forecast serves as a critical reminder of the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of flooding and severe thunderstorms across the country.
