The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Delta State Command, has uncovered a heavily fortified suspected drug hideout with underground tunnels in Asaba, the state capital, raising concerns about possible links to other criminal activities.
The operation, conducted by the command’s patrol team, took place around Fallingwater Colehouse, Yahweh Close, off Akara Junction, along the 74 Junction–Asaba Specialist Hospital axis. It followed intelligence reports about suspected drug-dealing activities in the area.
The NSCDC spokesperson in Delta State, DSC Anthony Akachukwu, said on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, that operatives had spent several days trying to gain access to the property because of its fortified structure.
According to him, officers eventually gained entry through the roof and discovered multiple layers of iron doors and underground passages believed to have provided escape routes for people inside the building.
Akachukwu said the tunnels appeared to connect different parts of the surrounding area, allowing suspects to flee when security operatives approached. He added that some individuals reportedly escaped during the operation.
The discovery has widened the scope of the investigation, with the corps examining whether the property may have been used for criminal activities beyond suspected drug dealing. However, authorities have not established any confirmed connection between the site and kidnapping.
During the operation, officers recovered substances suspected to be illicit drugs, including materials locally known as “Loud” and “Ice”, as well as PVC gum. The command said the recovered items would form part of the ongoing investigation.
A man identified only as Yakubu was also arrested after allegedly arriving at the location to purchase drugs. According to the NSCDC spokesperson, the suspect reportedly began negotiating with an operative whom he believed was connected to the suspected drug outlet before being apprehended.
The command said investigations were continuing to identify other suspects, determine who owned or controlled the property and establish the full extent of the alleged criminal activities.
Another aspect of the investigation concerns a notebook reportedly recovered from the premises. The document was said to contain records of payments allegedly made to security personnel. However, the authenticity and contents of the notebook have not been independently verified, and the NSCDC has not publicly identified any security personnel allegedly mentioned in it.
A resident of the area, who requested anonymity, described the location as a longstanding source of concern, alleging that unusual movements of vehicles and people had been observed around the premises for years. The claims have not been independently verified.
The resident called on the Delta State Government and security authorities to consider securing the property and its underground passages to prevent their possible reuse.
Akachukwu said the command was investigating the ownership of the building and had obtained information that still required verification before it could be made public.
He added that the scene would remain under surveillance while investigations continued and efforts were made to apprehend those who escaped.
The discovery comes amid broader efforts by security agencies to tackle suspected drug trafficking and related criminal activities in Delta State. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency remains the principal agency responsible for enforcing Nigeria’s laws against illicit drugs.
The NSCDC has not announced any decision to demolish the property, while the alleged links to kidnapping and possible payments to security personnel remain matters for further investigation.
The command said further arrests could follow as investigators work to establish the identities of those involved and determine whether charges should be brought before a court.
