At least three people have been killed and more than 20 others injured after Russian missile and drone strikes hit Ukraine, damaging critical energy infrastructure and leaving approximately 600,000 people without electricity.

The attacks occurred overnight into Wednesday, October 14, 2026, with Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and Kharkiv among the areas targeted.

Ukrainian authorities said the strikes damaged residential buildings and energy facilities, triggering emergency power outages as repair crews worked to restore electricity supplies.

In Kyiv, two people were reportedly killed when a missile struck a nine-storey residential building in the Desnianskyi district, while another person died in a separate strike in the Holosiivskyi district.

Emergency services reported more than 20 injuries, including a child, as rescue workers searched damaged buildings and assisted affected residents.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones during the overnight assault.

According to Zelenskyy, the strikes damaged 30 energy facilities, comprising 26 electricity-related facilities and four facilities in the oil and gas sector. He warned that the power outages could spread further as authorities assessed the damage.

The Ukrainian president condemned the attacks, arguing that they deliberately targeted infrastructure covered by a proposed energy ceasefire announced by United States President Donald Trump.

Trump had announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. However, neither Moscow nor Kyiv had formally confirmed the arrangement as a mutually agreed ceasefire.

Zelenskyy also criticised the lack of advance warning from Ukraine’s Western partners about the incoming missile attacks, saying early intelligence alerts were essential to protecting civilian lives.

The strikes come as Ukraine approaches another winter amid continued attacks on its energy network, raising concerns about electricity and heating supplies for households and businesses.

Emergency personnel and energy workers were deployed to affected locations to assess the damage, assist victims and begin restoration efforts.

The latest assault underscores the continuing vulnerability of Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure as diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities remain uncertain.
