Residents Reportedly Flee Fegin Mahe Community in Zamfara as Suspected Bandits Spark Fresh Security Fears

Residents of Fegin Mahe community in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State have reportedly fled their homes following an alleged incursion by armed bandits, raising fresh concerns about the safety of rural settlements already affected by repeated attacks and displacement.

Reports emerging on Thursday, October 15, 2026, indicated that suspected bandits were present in Fegin Mahe, prompting residents to leave the community in fear. Photographs described as showing people fleeing have circulated alongside the reports. However, Stone Reporters News has not independently verified the photographs, the exact time they were taken or whether armed attackers remain in the community.

The reports have not established the number of residents who fled, whether any casualties occurred or whether people were abducted. There is also no independently confirmed information about damage to homes, businesses or other property during the alleged incident.

The identity and number of the suspected attackers remain unknown. No verified account has established how they entered the community, whether they fired weapons or whether they issued threats before residents began leaving.

As of the time of this report, no official statement specifically confirming the latest alleged incursion in Fegin Mahe had been identified from the Zamfara State Police Command or the state government.

The absence of official confirmation does not establish that the incident did not occur. It means that the details currently circulating require further verification before they can be presented as established facts.

Fegin Mahe is among the communities in Gusau Local Government Area that have previously experienced serious security challenges. Residents from the area have repeatedly raised concerns about attacks, abductions and the disruption of agricultural activities.

In July 2025, residents from Fegin Mahe and neighbouring communities participated in protests over insecurity, calling on the Zamfara State Government and security agencies to provide greater protection.

The demonstrations involved people from communities including Mada, Ruwan Bore, Fegin Baza, Bangi, Lilo and Wonaka. Protesters said persistent attacks had endangered lives, restricted movement and prevented farmers from carrying out their normal activities.

A resident of Fegin Mahe, Abubakar Abdullahi, told journalists during those protests that attacks had affected his family and livelihood. He reported losing relatives and agricultural supplies to armed groups operating in the area.

His account reflected concerns expressed by other residents who said insecurity had made ordinary economic activities increasingly difficult. Some reported abandoning farms or avoiding journeys because of fears of encountering armed attackers.

The protesters appealed to Governor Dauda Lawal to strengthen security arrangements and respond to the difficulties facing communities around Gusau.

Local government representatives subsequently acknowledged the complaints and indicated that efforts were being made in collaboration with security agencies to improve protection in affected settlements.

Those earlier events provide context for the latest reports from Fegin Mahe, although they do not independently confirm the circumstances of the alleged October 15 incident.

The community has also featured in previous reports concerning security operations against suspected bandits.

In July 2025, police and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force reportedly confronted armed men around Fegin Kanawa in the Wonaka district of Gusau Local Government Area.

The operation followed intelligence concerning a possible attack, with security personnel and local volunteers responding from the Fegin Mahe area.

Reports at the time indicated that eight suspected bandits were killed during the confrontation. The incident demonstrated the security challenges facing communities around the district and the involvement of local volunteers in responding to threats.

However, the earlier confrontation is separate from the latest allegation and does not establish the identity of any armed individuals reportedly present in Fegin Mahe on Thursday.

More recently, other parts of Zamfara State have experienced attacks involving abductions, destruction of property and threats against travellers.

On October 4, reports emerged that armed men had attacked several communities in Gusau, Maru and Bungudu local government areas, abducting residents and setting vehicles ablaze.

The affected settlements reportedly included Yargada, Maikogo and Magama Mairake. Accounts from residents described armed men entering communities during the night and searching houses.

Some witnesses said women and children were among those abducted. The reports prompted renewed concern about the ability of vulnerable communities to protect themselves against organised armed groups.

These incidents occurred in different locations and should not be treated as evidence that the same attackers are responsible for the reported situation in Fegin Mahe.

Separate concerns have also emerged along the Dansadau–Gusau road, where threatening recordings attributed to armed groups have circulated in recent days.

The recordings reportedly contained warnings about attacks on vehicles and communities accused of providing information to security personnel.

On October 14, reports indicated that suspected bandits had threatened to destroy numerous vehicles travelling through the corridor if weapons allegedly seized from them were not returned.

The authenticity of every claim contained in those recordings has not been independently established. Nevertheless, the reports have contributed to wider concern about insecurity affecting communities and transport routes across the state.

A separate report concerning a grain-laden trailer allegedly set ablaze along the Dansadau–Magami road also emerged this week.

Although that incident was reported in another part of Zamfara, it illustrates the wider security concerns confronting residents, traders and transport operators.

The situation in Fegin Mahe requires particular attention because reports of people leaving their homes can indicate immediate fears for personal safety, even before the circumstances of a suspected attack are fully established.

Displacement can interrupt access to food, water, healthcare and accommodation. Families who leave suddenly may also become separated or lose access to their livelihoods.

However, there is currently insufficient verified information to determine whether those reportedly fleeing Fegin Mahe require emergency shelter or humanitarian assistance.

Reliable information about their whereabouts and welfare would be necessary before the scale of any humanitarian response could be assessed.

The photographs said to accompany the latest reports may help document residents' movements, but their evidential value depends on confirming when and where they were recorded.

Images circulating online can sometimes relate to earlier incidents or different locations. For that reason, they should not be presented as definitive proof of a particular attack without appropriate verification.

Stone Reporters News has not been provided with independently authenticated images establishing the reported presence of bandits in Fegin Mahe.

The immediate priority for public authorities is to establish the circumstances of the reported incident and communicate reliable information that enables residents to make informed safety decisions.

Confirmation from local security officials, community representatives and emergency responders would help clarify whether an attack occurred, how many people were affected and what protective measures are in place.

It would also establish whether the reported movement of residents was caused by direct violence, threats or fears arising from information circulating within the community.

Until those details become available, claims about casualties, abductions or the number of attackers would be premature.

The latest reports nevertheless draw attention to a community where residents have previously expressed serious concerns about their security and livelihoods.

For families reportedly leaving Fegin Mahe, the central concern remains personal safety and the possibility of returning home without further threats.

As of October 15, the alleged presence of armed bandits and the reported flight of residents had not been independently confirmed. Further official information is awaited to establish the full circumstances of the situation.
