Suspected bandits have abducted a local government official and his two sons from their family residence in Zaria, Kaduna State, raising fresh concerns about kidnapping and insecurity in communities across the state. The whereabouts of the three victims remain unknown, while details of the circumstances surrounding their abduction continue to emerge from local accounts.
The victims were identified as Lamido Muhammad, the Supervisory Councillor for Special Duties in Zaria Local Government Area, and his sons, Aliyu Lamido and Amir Lamido. According to reports published on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, armed men invaded their residence in the Wucicciri neighbourhood of the Abba area around midnight on Sunday, October 11, and took them to an undisclosed location. The incident has not yet been accompanied by a publicly available official statement confirming the circumstances of the abduction.
Local sources said the attackers entered the councillor's home during the night and took him away alongside his children. The reports did not establish the number of assailants, the weapons they carried or the means of transportation used to leave the community. It was also unclear whether other members of the household were present when the incident occurred.
The abducted official is originally from Kaladi village in the Wucicciri district of Zaria. He reportedly worked as a schoolteacher before entering politics and subsequently becoming the Supervisory Councillor for Special Duties in the local government administration. His position involves responsibilities within the council's administrative structure, although the specific duties assigned to him were not detailed in the reports.
A community source described Muhammad as someone who had contributed to development activities in his area. The source also said he had been expected to participate in this year's Hajj pilgrimage, although no further information was provided about those arrangements. These personal details were attributed to local accounts rather than an official statement from the council.
The reported abduction has drawn attention to security concerns affecting Wucicciri and neighbouring settlements. Residents of parts of Zaria have experienced incidents involving suspected armed groups, including kidnapping and cattle theft, according to accounts gathered from the affected communities.
Among the locations identified in reports of previous attacks are Kaladi and Yaskwake villages, as well as Zakarar Mahauta and Zakarar Fulani. These communities have been mentioned in connection with earlier security disturbances, although the available information does not establish that the same individuals or criminal groups were responsible for each incident.
A source familiar with the councillor's community also alleged that cattle belonging to Muhammad were stolen during an attack on his village last year. The allegation suggests that the family may previously have experienced the effects of insecurity, but no police documentation confirming the earlier incident was included in the published accounts.
The latest attack raises questions about the circumstances under which armed men were reportedly able to enter a residential property and remove three occupants. However, the information available does not establish whether the attackers specifically targeted Muhammad because of his public office or whether other considerations influenced their actions.
No ransom demand has been publicly confirmed, and there has been no verified information concerning communication between the abductors and the victims' relatives. Reports also have not established whether the three were injured during the incident or whether any conditions have been imposed for their release.
Efforts by journalists to obtain official confirmation were unsuccessful when the incident was first reported. A correspondent for Trust Radio visited the Zaria Local Government Secretariat but was unable to obtain a statement from an authorised council official.
Attempts to contact the Kaduna State Police Command's spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, also reportedly produced no response despite telephone calls and text messages. Consequently, the police had not publicly confirmed the reported abduction or disclosed any rescue operation specifically connected to the three victims.
The absence of an official response should not be interpreted as evidence that the authorities have taken no action. It means that the available reporting does not establish what operational measures, if any, have been undertaken in relation to this particular case.
The incident comes amid wider security operations by the Kaduna State Police Command against suspected kidnappers and individuals accused of providing information to criminal groups. Earlier this week, the command announced the arrest of 12 suspects during operations in Millennium City and Maraban Rido.
According to a statement issued by police spokesperson Mansir Hassan on Monday, October 12, the suspects comprised eight alleged kidnappers and four suspected informants. The arrests followed targeted raids, clearance operations and patrols carried out with support from other security agencies.
Police identified the eight suspected kidnappers as Dauda Murna, Usman Abdullahi, Abubakar Sulaiman, Saleh Abdullahi, Usman Muhammed, Mathias Moses, Makama John and Tafarki Audu. The four suspected informants were identified as Shuaibu Sabiu, Audu Makama, Simon Moses and Amadu Mathew.
The command said AK-47 rifles were recovered during the operations. Investigators also alleged that two suspects admitted disclosing information about police movements to criminal elements, potentially undermining security operations and exposing personnel and residents to danger.
Those arrests were announced in connection with security challenges in Millennium City and Maraban Rido, not the reported abduction in Zaria. There is no publicly established link between the suspects detained during those operations and the disappearance of Muhammad and his sons.
The Kaduna State Government also provided three additional armoured personnel carriers to support police operations in affected communities. Authorities said the vehicles would strengthen operational capacity and assist efforts to improve surveillance and response to security threats.
The announcement followed an October 10 engagement involving traditional rulers, community representatives, security officials and a government delegation led by Governor Uba Sani's Chief of Staff, Sani Kila. Participants discussed security challenges and the importance of cooperation between residents and law enforcement agencies.
During the engagement, the government urged community leaders, landlords and young people to report suspected criminal activity and provide credible information to security personnel. Police also reiterated their commitment to identifying suspected collaborators and dismantling kidnapping networks.
Kaduna Commissioner of Police Muhammad Rabiu directed the deployment of additional tactical personnel and operational resources to strengthen security in areas experiencing repeated attacks. The measures were announced as part of broader efforts to address kidnapping and related criminal activities.
Nevertheless, the measures cannot yet be assessed in relation to the Zaria abduction because the police have not provided information connecting them to the reported incident. Any conclusion about their effectiveness in this particular case would require further operational details.
The reported kidnapping of Muhammad and his sons places renewed attention on the safety of residents, including public officials and their families, in communities affected by armed attacks. It also highlights the importance of timely information about missing persons and the circumstances of suspected abductions.
As of the latest available reports, Lamido Muhammad, Aliyu Lamido and Amir Lamido remained unaccounted for. There had been no confirmed announcement of their release, no publicly verified ransom demand and no official identification of the suspected abductors.
Further information from the Kaduna State Police Command, Zaria Local Government authorities or the victims' family will be necessary to establish the progress of any investigation and the circumstances surrounding their disappearance.
