Abuja, October 14, 2025 — The acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, has assured the Labour Party that the commission will review the party’s request regarding the upload of its candidates for the FCT Area Council elections.

Speaking during the quarterly consultative meeting between INEC and the leadership of political parties, held at the commission’s headquarters, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu informed the Labour Party National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, that the matter would be examined carefully. The National Secretary of the party, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, was also present, representing the officially recognized leadership of the Labour Party.

In his remarks, Barrister Abure congratulated the INEC acting chair on her recent appointment, praising her leadership and legal background. He emphasized that having lawyers at the helm of institutions helps curb impunity, strengthen democracy, and ensure effective governance. He commended INEC for recognizing the formal leadership of the Labour Party and for adhering to court directives.

Abure further appealed to INEC to release the electoral code required for uploading the Labour Party candidates for the FCT Area Council elections. He explained that the party had followed due process, conducted primaries, and submitted the approved list to the commission. “We therefore urge INEC to release the code so that we can upload our candidates and participate fully in the ongoing campaign for the Area Council election,” he said.

The Labour Party leadership expressed confidence that under Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, INEC would continue to perform credibly, effectively, and constitutionally, strengthening democracy and preparing the groundwork for a successful 2027 general election.

The consultative meeting was attended by all 18 national chairmen and national secretaries of registered political parties, along with INEC commissioners.
