Nigeria Sends More Officials Than Athletes to World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

Nigeria’s outing at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo has sparked fresh controversy as reports confirm that the country sent just 15 athletes to the global competition — outnumbered by the officials in the delegation.

Unlike in previous years, Nigeria had no representation in the relay events after administrative lapses, including visa delays for athletes during qualifying competitions and registration errors, cost the nation key opportunities.

Observers have criticised the development, describing it as another setback in Nigeria’s athletics administration, especially at a time when athletes continue to express frustration over poor preparations, inadequate funding, and systemic failures within the country’s sports management structures.

Sports stakeholders are now calling for urgent reforms to address what they term as “recurring negligence,” warning that without decisive action, Nigeria risks continued embarrassment at international sporting events.
