Governor Oborevwori Demotes Sports Official After Delta’s NYG Setback

The Delta State Sports Commission is under scrutiny following the state’s disappointing performance at the recently concluded National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, where Lagos State dethroned Delta to claim the top position.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, visibly dissatisfied with both Team Delta’s performance and organizational lapses during the Games, convened an emergency meeting with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) immediately after the closing ceremony.

Delta, which had consistently finished first in the last eight editions of the NYG, settled for second place this year—a result the governor described as “totally unacceptable,” especially given the state’s significant investment in the event.

A reliable source at the meeting revealed that Governor Oborevwori expressed deep disappointment, emphasizing that his administration had provided all necessary support to the Sports Commission and LOC to ensure Delta retained its top position.

In a decisive response, the governor demoted his Executive Assistant on Sports and former Director-General of the Sports Commission, Festus Owhojero. Owhojero was reassigned from Executive Assistant (EA) to Senior Special Assistant (SSA) with immediate effect, reflecting the governor’s zero-tolerance policy for underperformance.

Governor Oborevwori further instructed the Sports Commission and LOC officials to submit a comprehensive report detailing the shortcomings of the Games and proposing measures for improvement. He emphasized the urgency of reforms to restore Delta’s dominance, particularly as the state is set to host the next edition of the Games under an existing memorandum of understanding.
