The Honourable Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) in Benue State, James Oche, has urged public office holders in the state to remain committed to the service of the people, stressing that effective leadership in public institutions is crucial to delivering quality services to Nigerians.
Oche made this call in Makurdi during a courtesy visit to the Chief Medical Director of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Dr. Stephen Hwande, whom he described as a leader bringing unprecedented transformation to the state-owned health facility. He recalled their shared years at Mount Saint Gabriel’s Secondary School and said Hwande’s lifelong commitment to excellence is now evident in the remarkable progress being witnessed at BSUTH.
Highlighting the statutory role of the PCC as the “Ombudsman Commission” tasked with monitoring the performance of public institutions, Oche explained that his unscheduled, short-notice visit was aimed at carrying out an unbiased assessment of the hospital’s operations and service delivery.
Responding, Dr. Hwande briefed the Commissioner and his delegation on the reforms and innovations taking place under his administration. He disclosed that BSUTH had recently established a fully functional In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) centre, offering services to the public at subsidised costs. He further noted the creation of a fully automated VIP smart clinic run by specialists, alongside a wide range of other improvements.
The CMD also listed the remodelling and refurbishment of the Radiology Department, the enforcement of ultra-hygiene standards across the hospital, the introduction of biometric attendance to curb absenteeism among staff, and continuous maintenance upgrades as part of his ongoing reforms.
Oche, visibly impressed, expressed his Commission’s satisfaction with the progress and urged the hospital’s management to sustain the drive for excellence while assuring continued oversight and support from the PCC.
The visit culminated in a joint inspection of key project sites by Oche’s delegation and the hospital management team led by Dr. Hwande.
