Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, a distinguished legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), bringing over thirty years of experience in law, academia, and public service to the country’s electoral body. Born on April 25, 1967, in Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Professor Amupitan has established a remarkable career marked by intellectual depth, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to justice and institutional excellence.
Currently serving as a Professor of Law and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, Plateau State, he began his academic journey at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, before earning his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) at the University of Jos in 1987 and being called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. Driven by a passion for scholarship, he later obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in 1993 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law in 2007, reflecting his enduring commitment to legal education and research.

Renowned for his expertise in Company Law, Corporate Governance, Law of Evidence, and Privatisation Law, Professor Amupitan achieved the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2014, joining the elite cadre of legal practitioners recognized for integrity and excellence. His contributions extend to national development through appointments to the Council of Legal Education, the Governing Council of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, and boards of key organizations including Integrated Dairies Limited and Riss Oil Limited, where he influenced policy, corporate governance, and institutional reforms.
