Adamawa Marks 2025 International Day of the Girl Child with Awareness Walk and Advocacy

The Adamawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in partnership with UNFPA, UNICEF, NURU International, Save the Children, and JRS, celebrated the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child with a road awareness walk from Old Market to Runde Primary School in Jimeta, Yola North LGA, on Friday, October 24, 2025.

The event was held under this year’s global theme, “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead,” emphasizing the strength, capability, and potential of girls to drive positive change within their families, schools, and communities. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Hajiya Zainab Umar Adamu, representing the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to protecting girls from violence, abuse, and neglect, while ensuring they have equal access to learning and opportunities to succeed. She expressed gratitude to partner organizations for their continuous support, urging girls to recognize their value and the importance of their voices in shaping society.

Honourable Kate Mamuno, Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, praised the resilience and determination of girls in Adamawa State who continue to pursue education, leadership roles, and personal development despite challenges. She assured participants of the lawmakers’ dedication to enacting and supporting policies that safeguard girls’ rights, eliminate gender-based violence, and promote equal opportunities for all.

The event was attended by dignitaries including Hon. Kate Mamuno, the Majority Leader of the House of Assembly; Mrs. Mary Paninga, Chairperson of the Planning Commission; Hajiya Zainab Umar Adamu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry; and the Vice Chairperson of Yola North LGA, among others.

Highlights of the celebration included the presentation of awards to partner organizations in recognition of their continuous support and selfless service toward advancing the welfare of girls and promoting human development in the state.
