Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed grave concern over the recent designation of Nigeria by the United States government as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) and the accompanying indications of possible military action.

In a statement issued on Monday, Obi described the development as “deeply worrisome”, emphasizing that it should serve as a wake-up call for all well-meaning Nigerians.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented level of insecurity with attendant carnage and the most shocking loss of lives and property,” Obi stated.

Citing data from Amnesty International, he lamented that over 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023, describing the continuous unprovoked and unwarranted killings as “most condemnable.”

He stressed that the worsening insecurity was largely avoidable, attributing it to incompetent leadership, mismanagement of resources, and lack of patriotic governance under the current APC-led administration.

“While the insecurity did not start with the present government, what is most unfortunate is the absence of competence, commitment, prudent use of resources, patriotism and passion on the part of APC leaders to effectively govern and lead Nigeria where peace, truth, and justice reign,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor urged the Nigerian government to adopt a constructive and diplomatic approach in addressing the U.S. designation, stressing that both countries have long enjoyed strategic partnerships rooted in democracy and regional stability.

“As democracies, Nigeria and the U.S. have long been strategic partners committed to regional peace and security. That relationship should not falter. The present situation calls for constructive diplomatic engagement by both nations,” he added.

Obi concluded by calling for urgent, concerted action between Nigeria and the U.S. to restore peace, protect lives, and rebuild trust in the country’s governance and security systems.
