The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Friday, April 3, and Monday, April 6, 2026, will be observed as public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebrations. The declaration was made by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, in a statement released on Wednesday. These dates correspond to Good Friday and Easter Monday, with Easter Sunday falling in between.
The announcement allows Nigerians to observe the religious significance of Easter, a period that commemorates the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and is marked by reflection, worship, and family gatherings. Citizens are encouraged to use the extended weekend for prayer, rest, and spending time with loved ones, while observing safety guidelines and public health protocols where necessary.
Government agencies, banks, and most public institutions will observe the holidays, although essential services and certain sectors will continue operations to maintain necessary public functions. The declaration reinforces the government’s recognition of Easter as an important religious and cultural occasion for millions of Nigerians.
The Minister of Interior also extended greetings to Christians within Nigeria and in the diaspora, emphasizing the values associated with the Easter season, including selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance, and love. He urged citizens to uphold these principles in their personal lives and communities to foster tolerance, unity, and peaceful coexistence.
Easter, widely celebrated across Nigeria, involves church services, family gatherings, and community events that bring people together in reflection and celebration. The government’s declaration ensures that Nigerians have the official time to participate fully in these observances, strengthening national recognition of significant religious events.
