Nigeria’s Federal Government has announced two major leadership decisions affecting key institutions in the energy and power sectors. On April 2, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR approved the appointment of Professor Shu’aibu Shehu Aliyu as the new Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) and renewed the tenure of Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for a second and final term. Both decisions take effect immediately, reflecting the administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen governance, operational performance, and institutional capacity in these strategic agencies.

Professor Shu’aibu Shehu Aliyu, an academic with a distinguished career in historical research and educational leadership, has been selected to lead the PTDF, succeeding Ahmed Galadima Aminu, who stepped down from the role to pursue a political ambition in the 2027 governorship election in Adamawa State. Professor Aliyu is a respected historian and scholar born in 1969 in Anchau, Kaduna State, who has spent more than three decades in academia and institutional administration. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in History and has held senior academic positions, including as Director of Arewa House, a premier centre for historical research and documentation affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His extensive research interests cover Northern Nigerian history, Islamic studies, migration, and the Sokoto Caliphate, with numerous publications and advisory roles to educational and development organisations.

The PTDF, established to build indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, funds scholarships, fellowships, research, and technology initiatives that align with the country’s goals for local participation in the energy sector. Professor Aliyu’s appointment is understood to reflect the Presidency’s intention to deepen human capital development, innovation, and strategic partnerships. In announcing his appointment, the Presidency emphasised that his experience in research, education, and leadership will be critical to repositioning PTDF to meet national developmental priorities. Under Professor Aliyu’s leadership, stakeholders expect an increased focus on expanding educational programmes, enhancing technological capabilities, and forging collaborative initiatives between the PTDF and both local and international partners. The role will require balancing academic insight with strategic policymaking to support a petroleum sector undergoing global transitions driven by innovation and energy diversification. In addition to his academic accolades, Professor Aliyu has been recognised for his leadership in facilitating institutional reforms and programmes that promote capacity-building. His appointment is widely viewed as strategic, aimed at reinvigorating PTDF’s vision and reinforcing its position as a catalyst for knowledge and skills advancement in Nigeria’s energy sector.

President Tinubu also extended the tenure of Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria for a second and final term. This renewal follows what the Presidency described as a comprehensive assessment of his performance in leading Nigeria’s transmission network. Engineer Abdulaziz is an experienced electrical engineer and industry professional who has worked in Nigeria’s power sector since 1996, beginning his career at the now-defunct National Electric Power Authority. He rose through technical and managerial ranks, holding roles such as Regional Transmission Manager before being confirmed as TCN’s substantive MD/CEO in April 2022, after serving as Acting Managing Director since May 2020. He holds a Master’s in Automation Engineering from the Technical University in Sofia, Bulgaria, and is a Chartered Member of the Nigeria Institute of Management and a registered engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria.

Under Engineer Abdulaziz’s leadership, TCN has overseen notable improvements in grid stability and transmission capacity, expanded infrastructure projects, and begun applying modernisation practices across the electricity transmission network. The company, which operates Nigeria’s national grid infrastructure, is central to the flow of electricity from generating companies to distribution networks and by extension, to end consumers. Transmission of reliable power has long been a challenge in Nigeria’s electricity sector, and TCN’s operational efficiency is a critical component in addressing these structural issues. In addition to his domestic responsibilities, Engineer Abdulaziz has contributed to regional power sector integration through leadership roles within the West African Power Pool, part of the Economic Community of West African States. His tenure at TCN has been marked by efforts to enhance collaboration between West African countries for improved cross-border electricity trade and infrastructure development. President Tinubu’s renewal of his appointment underscores a push for sustained investment in transmission infrastructure, maintenance programming, and grid technology modernisation, acknowledging both the progress to date and the complex challenges that remain in delivering reliable electricity across Nigeria.

These appointments come at a critical juncture for Nigeria’s energy and power industries, both of which are undergoing structural reforms, increased investment, and policy repositioning to promote greater reliability, capacity, and contribution to the national economy. The PTDF’s mandate to develop local expertise remains central to Nigeria’s strategy for reducing dependence on foreign skills in the petroleum sector. By focusing on education, training, research, and innovation, the agency is expected to support the country’s long-term energy objectives and improve competitiveness in a sector facing dynamic global shifts including the energy transition towards lower-carbon sources. In the power sector, advancing grid stability and expanding transmission infrastructure are necessary to support industrial growth, improve electricity access, and enhance economic productivity. The Transmission Company of Nigeria plays a foundational role in this process, connecting power generation to distribution and facilitating regional integration. Both leadership decisions align with President Tinubu’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises institutional resilience, economic growth, and human capital development. Government analysts, sector stakeholders, and civil society organisations have highlighted the need for transparent performance benchmarks and stakeholder engagement as the new and renewed leaders assume their roles.

As Professor Aliyu takes charge at the PTDF and Engineer Abdulaziz continues his leadership at TCN, expectations are that their combined expertise will contribute to strengthening these pivotal institutions. The decisions signal continuity and enhanced focus on strategic leadership at a time when Nigeria’s energy and power sectors are critical to national development, investor confidence, and meeting the aspirations of citizens. Officials and industry watchers will closely monitor how these appointments translate into measurable improvements, particularly in educational investment outcomes within the petroleum sector and improvements in Nigeria’s electricity transmission performance.
