Operation Whirl Stroke troops in Taraba State have arrested three suspected collaborators who allegedly provided logistics and actionable intelligence to terrorist groups operating across the volatile Karim-Lamido Local Government Area. The operation, carried out at dawn on May 10, 2026, targeted terrorist hideouts in the rural communities of Binari, Chibi and Andamin, days after security forces uncovered alarming intelligence about an expanding support network embedded within the local population.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama, who broke the news, disclosed that the operation was conducted by troops of Sector 3 OPWS stationed in Jimilari. Sources speaking to Makama said the three suspects, whose identities have not been publicly disclosed, are believed to have been "supporting terrorist groups operating in the communities". Military authorities have since confirmed that the suspects are in custody and are being interrogated to determine "the extent of their involvement and possible links to wider criminal networks".
A terse statement by the Directorate of Operations for OPWS reiterated that troops would continue clearance operations and intelligence‑based raids across vulnerable communities in Karim-Lamido to "dismantle support structures for criminal elements and restore security in the area". The operation underscores a strategic shift within the Nigerian military's counter‑insurgency approach in the North‑Central: moving beyond kinetic strikes to actively targeting the civilian support networks that sustain terrorist groups with food, shelter, money and information. The arrests come amid heightened security concerns across Nigeria's northeastern and north‑central zones, where insurgent and bandit groups have increasingly exploited remote villages as staging grounds.
Observers note that continued military presence and regular engagements with local leaders will be essential to sustain the gains achieved by the raid and prevent a resurgence of extremist support in the region. As investigations complete, further updates are expected from OPWS command regarding any additional arrests or prosecutions stemming from the May 10 operation.
