The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has formally inaugurated a Committee for the review of its Gender Policy, signaling a renewed commitment to gender equity, inclusiveness, and institutional strengthening across the board. The inauguration ceremony was held at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja.
The NSCDC Commandant General, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, emphasized the importance of sustaining the Gender Policy and called for collective efforts to improve its reach and impact across the Corps. He noted that the review of the policy would ensure that it remains relevant and effective in promoting gender equity and inclusiveness.
The event had in attendance key development partners, including UN Women, CLEEN Foundation, and Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN). These organizations have been supporting the NSCDC in its efforts to promote gender equity and inclusiveness.
Peter Mancha, Programme Manager and representative of the UN Women Country Representative, commended the NSCDC for the successful implementation of its Gender Policy and assured the Corps of sustained support in its gender-focused initiatives.
The Acting Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Mr. Peter Maduoma, highlighted the commendable impact of the Corps, particularly the establishment of the Special Female Squad, a landmark initiative birthed from the Gender Policy.
Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN): Mrs. Tolu Ojeshina provided a concise overview of the NSCDC Gender Policy, its influence on women in the Corps, and emphasized the need for a timely review after 4 years of implementation to reflect current realities and challenges.
The Committee, led by ACG Christiana Abiakam, has been mandated to review the Gender Policy and ensure that it is aligned with current realities and challenges. The Committee will work to ensure that the revised policy document is inclusive, gender-responsive, and aligns with legal standards.
The inauguration of the Committee to review the NSCDC's Gender Policy is a significant step towards promoting gender equity and inclusiveness in the Corps. With the support of key stakeholders, the Committee is expected to deliver a revised policy document that will enhance the Corps' commitment to gender equity and inclusiveness.
