The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has hosted a high-powered delegation from the Senate Committee on crude oil theft led by Chairman Senator Ned Nwoko at the IGP Smart Conference Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja. The meeting aimed to discuss strategies to curb onshore and offshore oil theft in Nigeria.
During the meeting, Senator Nwoko emphasized that the committee's mandate is to ensure that crude oil theft comes to an end, enabling the country to meet its oil production targets. He stressed that this mandate cannot be achieved without robust collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, which is critical to combating theft of the nation's crude oil. IGP Egbetokun responded by reiterating the Nigeria Police Force's dedication to combating crude oil theft, protecting critical national infrastructure, and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The IGP directed the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police in charge of the Departments of Operation and Force Intelligence to work with the Committee to achieve its mandate. This strategic framework is expected to enhance the effectiveness of efforts to combat crude oil theft and protect the nation's economic interests.
In a separate meeting, the IGP received a delegation from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) led by the Chairperson of the commission's Governing Council, Dr. Salamatu Husaini Sulaiman. The meeting discussed areas of mutual interest and deepened cooperation on human rights protection and police accountability. The NHRC commended the IGP for the effectiveness in handling complaints from members of the public against erring officers and disciplinary sanctions awarded.
The IGP emphasized that policing centers on upholding human rights and that the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership frowns at arbitrary arrests, excessive use of force, and unlawful detention. He highlighted that human rights training has been introduced to all police training institutions to ensure that police officers uphold human rights in accordance with best practices.
The meetings with the Senate Committee on crude oil theft and the NHRC delegation demonstrate the Nigeria Police Force's commitment to addressing critical national issues and promoting human rights protection. The strategic framework to combat crude oil theft and the emphasis on human rights training for police officers are expected to enhance the effectiveness of the Force's operations and promote a culture of accountability and professionalism.
