Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have once again etched their names in history by clinching their seventh African championship title at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket. The Coach Rena Wakama-led side triumphed in a thrilling final on Sunday night, defeating Mali 78-64 at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The victory marks D’Tigress’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, reinforcing Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball on the African continent.
Reacting to the landmark achievement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated the team, praising their "skill, resilience, determination, and teamwork" which he said propelled them to victory despite a shaky start, having lost the first quarter of the match.
“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud. Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work,” the President stated.
President Tinubu lauded the team’s consistency, noting that their fifth consecutive championship win is not only a testament to their dedication but also a record-setting feat on the African stage.
“You have written your names in history and shown the world what to expect out of Africa,” he added.
The President also commended Head Coach Rena Wakama and her technical crew for their "exemplary leadership," as well as the Nigeria Basketball Federation for their unwavering support.
“The Federal Government and Nigerians will never forget the sacrifices and remain grateful for the highly elevating performances,” President Tinubu said. He assured the team of the nation's continued backing as they prepare for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments next March.
President Tinubu concluded his statement by expressing eagerness to host the victorious team in Abuja, saying, “I look forward to receiving the victorious team and the trophy in Abuja, while wishing you all a safe trip.”
