A Nigerian soldier has taken to social media to express deep frustration over the poor welfare and remuneration of military personnel, highlighting the stark contrast between the treatment of soldiers and other sectors of society, particularly sports and politics.
In an emotional outburst that has gone viral, the unnamed soldier questioned the priorities of the Nigerian government following recent reports that players of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s national football team, were rewarded with ₦150 million each and a housing unit for their performance at a global tournament.
The soldier, clearly heartbroken and angry, lamented that many soldiers earn less than ₦100,000 per month, despite risking their lives daily, especially those posted to conflict zones such as the North East and North West, where Nigeria continues to battle insurgency and banditry.
“Some of us join the military today and die the next month on the war front,” he cried out. “But our sacrifices are forgotten. A footballer plays for one month and earns ₦150 million with an apartment. Is that fair?”
The soldier also decried the lavish salaries and allowances enjoyed by Nigerian lawmakers, especially senators, whose monthly pay reportedly exceeds what a soldier earns in 35 years of service.
“The money senators receive every month is more than what a soldier earns in 35 years of risking his life. Yet we are the ones protecting this country,” he said.
In his powerful message, the soldier did not just address the president but extended his frustration to state governors, local government chairmen, and councillors, urging them to remember the sacrifices made by soldiers and prioritize their welfare.
“To the president, the governors, senators, and down to the councillors, take care of soldiers. We are not asking for millions like footballers, but at least give us dignity and peace of mind to serve our country.”
The soldier’s message has sparked a wave of reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing solidarity and calling for a complete overhaul of military welfare and pay structure.
Social media users have demanded greater transparency in government spending, and many are questioning the moral justification for the wide gap in earnings between soldiers, politicians, and entertainers.
This latest outcry adds to ongoing debates about military funding, veterans' care, and the need for institutional reforms to support Nigeria’s armed forces who continue to face threats while receiving minimal compensation.
The soldier’s heartfelt plea is a reminder that behind every uniform is a human being who deserves to be treated with respect, fairness, and dignity.
