In a bold step towards promoting gender equality and women’s ownership of land and property, the Plateau State Ministry of Lands, Survey, and Town Planning, in collaboration with the Norwegian Refugee Council, convened a stakeholders’ technical meeting at the Ministry’s Conference Hall, located at 12 JD Gomwalk Boulevard, Jos.
The meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders — from traditional rulers and religious leaders to government officials and advocacy groups — in a united effort to strengthen institutional frameworks and push for legislative reforms that uphold women’s rights to property ownership.
🗣 “Laws must be amended”
Speaking at the event, Barr. Peter Nyam Gai, Commissioner for Lands, emphasized the urgency of addressing legal barriers that prevent women from owning property.
> “Laws are made by men and must be amended by men,” he stated, calling for collective action to revise existing legislation that discriminates against women.
He also announced a progressive initiative: the introduction of free forms for land titles specifically for women, encouraging banks and donor agencies to adopt similarly women-friendly policies.
👑 Traditional & Religious Endorsements
The initiative gained further credibility through the support of respected figures such as Mr. Tetmut Audu Gambo, District Head of Kombun, who noted:
> “Women are better property managers than men.”
Both the Jama’a Nasir Islam and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) lent their support, referencing religious teachings that validate women’s rights to own land and property.
🌍 Aiming for 2030: Women Owning Property
With a global target of increasing women’s land ownership by 2030, this initiative represents a critical step for Plateau State. Stakeholders at the meeting stressed that institutional commitment and legislative reform are key to success.
This movement is expected to positively transform the lives of women across the state — empowering them economically and socially.
