INTERNAL SECURITY: IGP Meets UN Delegation to Strengthen Fight Against Arms Proliferation

In a renewed push to curb the proliferation of illicit weapons in Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, today received a high-level delegation from the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC) and the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The delegation was led by Dr. Adedeji Ebo, alongside Mr. Anselme Yabouri, Director of UNREC; Miss Grub Nolwenn, UNREC staff; AIG Thomas Nebhon, and Lt. Col. O.N. Okon from the NCCSALW. Also present were all Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, the Force Secretary, and other top management officials of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

Key Focus: Collaborative Strategy Against Illicit Arms

The strategic meeting was aimed at boosting inter-agency collaboration to stem the tide of illegal arms and light weapons that continue to fuel insecurity across Nigeria. The UN delegation commended the Nigeria Police Force for its ongoing efforts, especially in volatile regions where criminal groups exploit illegal arms to destabilize communities.

<span;>> </span;>“Curbing arms proliferation is central to reducing insecurity,” noted the UN team.

“It requires coordinated intelligence, disarmament programmes, and strengthened local and international cooperation.”

IGP Vows to Intensify Arms Recovery Efforts

Responding to the delegation, IGP Egbetokun appreciated the unwavering support from the Office of the National Security Adviser and the international community, affirming the Police’s continued resolve to mop up illegal arms.

<span;>> </span;>“The influx of illegal arms is a clear and present threat to national security,” the IGP said.

“We will not relent in tracking and dismantling the criminal networks enabling arms smuggling and trafficking.”

He disclosed that the Force had already recovered thousands of firearms and ammunition, and reiterated that such recoveries would continue as part of a broader intelligence-sharing and joint operations initiative.
